Etsy's AI Rules for Sellers (2026): What's Allowed, Disclosed or Banned
Etsy has not banned AI, but it has drawn firm lines. This summary is based on Etsy's own published policy pages (linked below). Policies change, so read the originals before you build a business around any of this.
Allowed, with disclosure: seller-prompted AI creations
Etsy continues to allow sellers to use their own original prompts with AI tools to create items they sell. Etsy's examples include a fantasy scene made from the seller's original prompt, or a custom pet portrait made with AI tools. Two conditions matter:
- Human involvement. Every item must involve direct, individual human prompting, curation and creative input into that specific item.
- Disclosure. If an item is created with AI, you must say so in the listing description, and you cannot present AI-generated work as handmade or entirely your own creation.
Etsy files this under its "Designed by a seller" category: original designs, or seller-prompted AI art, offered as a digital download or printed by a third party.
Not allowed
| Not allowed | What Etsy says |
|---|---|
| Bot-generated content | Entirely bot-generated AI content is prohibited. Mass-automated generation of listings or products through scripts or other automated processes without individualized human oversight is prohibited. |
| AI-generated functional instructions | Content whose main purpose is to teach a buyer how to make, build, repair or complete something: craft patterns (knitting, crochet, sewing and similar), recipes, building or woodworking plans, instruction manuals, and instructional guides or e-books. Etsy's reason: AI-generated instructions may contain errors that buyers only discover after spending time and materials. |
| AI prompt bundles | Selling prompts separately from the finished artwork is prohibited. |
| Misleading AI images | AI image tools may not be used to make an item look better, higher quality or materially different than what the buyer receives. If you use AI in listing images, include at least one unedited photo against a real background. |
What this means in practice
- A fully automated "generate and upload hundreds of listings" pipeline is exactly what Etsy says it prohibits. If you use AI, keep a human making and checking each item.
- If you sell digital downloads, make sure the product is art or design, not an AI-written how-to, planner with instructions, recipe pack or pattern.
- Add a clear sentence in the description when AI was used, for example: "Design created with AI tools from my own prompts and edited by me."
- Etsy says it will "closely monitor" AI-generated art, so assume enforcement may tighten.
If you also use a production partner
Using print-on-demand or any other production partner has its own disclosure rule. See production-partner disclosure on Etsy.
